WHAT IS AyurVEDA?

AYURVEDA IS THE SCIENCE OF LIFE.

“AYUR” = LIFE & “VEDA” = SCIENCE OR KNOWLEDGE

Ayurveda is commonly referred to as the sister science of Yoga since the two are complementary to each other.

Ayurvedic practice and principle recognize the constant change we endure in our daily lives and give us the tools to restore optimal health. These changes are due to many factors in and out of our control. Ayurveda guides us in harnessing our bodies’ own ability to remove toxins that create imbalance.

Ayurveda comprehensively illuminates the basic laws and principles governing life on Earth. To understand Ayurveda is to understand the forces that engender our well-being as well as those that lie at the root of disease.

Dhanvantari; God of Ayurveda

Dhanvantari; God of Ayurveda

A Brief History: Ayurveda was discovered through meditation by Ancient Indian Sages around 5,000 years ago. It wasn’t until the 4th century BCE that Ayurveda made it’s first appearance in the epic poem Mahābhārata. A highly regarded devotional and philosophical poem about war, family and the four goals of life. In India the Mahābhārata is often referred to as the fifth Veda. As time passed and empires overturned we can see documentation of other early civilizations using practices and techniques of Ayurveda. At the turn of the 18th century British occupation silenced Ayurveda and implemented Western medicine to be the normative medical practice. BUT! Ayurveda prevails and continued to be passed down verbally as it had been for centuries. In the last 40 years or so, Ayurveda and it’s practices have found its place in the West!
